The third day of the BBVA Open Internacional de Valencia, being held at the Sporting Club de Tenis from September 13 to 20, produced several surprises in the tournament’s main draw.
The biggest upset was the elimination of No. 1 seed and world Top 100 player Oksana Selekhmeteva, who lost in straight sets to German qualifier Nastasja Schunk, 7-5, 6-4.
Earlier, in a clash between two players born in the Valencian Community, Alicia Herrero defeated Lucía Cortez in the longest match of the tournament so far, lasting almost three hours and ending 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. At the start of the day, Ane Mintegi overcame Ariana Geerlings 6-1, 6-4.
The most emotional match of the day featured Leyre Romero, who grew up at the club hosting the tournament, against 2021 champion Martina Trevisan. The Valencian won the first set 6-1, lost the second 2-6 and was unable to complete the comeback in the third, eventually falling 6-4.
Up to six matches took place on Court No. 5, with Clara Burel, Jennifer Ruggeri and Irene Burillo advancing to the next round, while the matches between Hodzic and Masarova, Steuer and Esquiva, and Cengiz and Maristany were still to be played.
At this time, another local player, Ángela Fita, is making her return to Valencia against Morocco’s Yasmine Kabbaj.
